Our Story

Family-Owned. Competition-Tested. Built for Every Student.

Math Genius was founded in Tallahassee, FL in 2012. We started with a single goal: give every student access to the same quality of math enrichment that national competitors have. More than a decade later, that mission still drives everything we build.

How We Started

The O'Donnell family launched Math Genius in 2012 to complement the strong math programs already present in the Tallahassee community, offering competitive enrichment for students who wanted to go further. What began as in-person classes at the elementary, middle, and high school levels grew into something larger as students and families responded to the results.

About Danny O'Donnell

Danny O'Donnell brings two lifelong careers to Math Genius. He has been teaching mathematics for over 40 years — at two universities, a community college, and in private enrichment settings with students ranging from 8-year-olds to adult learners in their sixties. He has also been a professional software developer and systems architect for over 45 years, having designed and built several large-scale state and national systems, including Police Certification and Training, Autism Therapy Tracking, Bridge Maintenance, Vehicle Permits, and Air Quality Tracking.

Over time, those two passions converged. When existing worksheets and textbooks could not keep up with the pace and variety his students needed, Danny built his own problem generator — initially just to give his students an unlimited supply of fresh, targeted practice problems. After generating several hundred problem types, he realized the system could do much more: power complete curriculum books, support any teacher building their own worksheets, and serve the broader math community at scale. Math Generators — a Math Genius product — is the result of that work.

What Our Students Have Accomplished

Our track record in competitive math speaks for itself. A few highlights from our students over the years:

  • Our oldest son won the 2017 National Who Wants to Be a Mathematician competition — after winning two Florida state championships, reaching the National Countdown Round at the 2014 MATHCOUNTS competition, and earning multiple perfect scores on the AMC 10 and AMC 12.
  • Three different Math Genius students have reached the National MATHCOUNTS Countdown Round.
  • In one year, 3 of the 4 members of the Florida MATHCOUNTS team that finished 2nd in the country attended our classes.
  • Many of our students have gone on to place in Mu Alpha Theta, AMC, and other state and national competitions.

Community Impact

The impact of Math Genius extends well beyond competition results. As a volunteer at a local non-magnet middle school with limited prior competition experience, Danny worked alongside an exceptional teacher to build a math program from the ground up. The result: the school qualified for the Florida MATHCOUNTS state competition for the first time in its history and finished in the top 10 statewide.

That experience reinforced what we had always believed — that with the right material and the right guidance, any student can grow significantly. Building tools that help teachers replicate that experience is exactly why this platform exists.

The Platform

Math Generators now contains over 2,000 problem types spanning algebra, geometry, number theory, probability, mental math, and more — with an estimated tens of millions of unique variations across all generators. Every problem is professionally typeset in LaTeX to the same standard as a published textbook, and every problem comes with a full step-by-step solution.

Whether you are a teacher building a class-ready worksheet in seconds, a parent looking for targeted practice on a specific topic, or a student preparing for a competition, this platform was built for you.
